Dead Ball

Dead ball is a phenomenon in many ball sports in which the ball is deemed temporarily not playable, and no movement may be made with it or the players from their respective positions of significance. Depending on the sport, this event may be quite routine, and often occurs between individual plays of the game.

Famous quotes containing the words dead and/or ball:

    Some sepulcher, remote, alone,
Against whose portal she hath thrown,
In childhood, many an idle stone—
Some tomb from out whose sounding door
She ne’er shall force an echo more,
Thrilling to think, poor child of sin!
It was the dead who groaned within.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

    The ball loved Flick.
I saw him rack up thirty-eight or forty
In one home game. His hands were like wild birds.
    John Updike (b. 1932)
