DD (character) - Biography

Biography

DD was a friendly variant of the competent computerised companion series whose first owner was the human girl Dahlia Sweeney, who passed DD onto to her daughter, Marianna Sweeney. After Marianna outgrew the friendly compy, and with no children of her own to pass it on to, DD was sold to the xenoarchaeologist Louis Colicos to help in the investigations of the Klikiss ruins on Rheindic Co.

During his ownership by Louis Colicos, DD helped the human and his wife Margaret Colicos set up camp on Rheindic Co, carried equipment to excavation sites, cooked for the pair and the green priest Arcas and occasionally sat in on a game of cards between Louis Colicos and Arcas. When the Klikiss robots - Sirix, Dekyk and Ilkot - that had accompanied the Colicos team turned against the humans to prevent the discovery that the robots had in fact exterminated their creator race, DD attempted ineffectually to protect the Colicos. After the death of Louis and the escape of Margaret, DD was spared by Sirix and instructed to accompany him while the Klikiss robots searched for a way to remove the programming that stopped compies from inflicting any harm to humans.

While with Sirix DD's compy body was upgraded to withstand the environments in which the Klikiss robots had made their strongholds, and DD was taken to an airless moon as well as to a hydrogue citysphere on the planet Ptoro. At Ptoro DD met with humans the hydrogues had taken captive, including Robb Brindle, but was unable to help the prisoners. DD was also made to watch the dissection of other compy robots when Sirix was attempting to explain what was being done to free the compies as well as the destruction of the human colony at Corribus by stolen EDF ships commanded by the Klikiss robots. During the attack on Corribus DD made an ineffective attempt to stop the slaughter by smashing a weapons console, despite the existence of secondary consoles and the adequate destructive capabilities of the other EDF ships.

DD was taken by Sirix to the world of Jonah 12 where an alcove of hundreds of Klikiss robots had been hidden but neither of the pair even touched the surface of the planet as an explosion was triggered there by a trio of Roamers. Sirix's ships was damaged in the event and DD was ordered to help him fix it. Despite the order DD tried to get rid of Sirix by setting adrift a section of hull plating on which Sirix was perched. The attempt was unsuccessful as Sirix returned to the main body of the ship using a grappling cord.

On the abandoned Klikiss world of Szeol the Klikiss robots finally succeeded in freeing DD on his restrictive programming, and DD promptly used his new freedom to escape the Klikiss robots through a Klikiss transportal. On traveling through the gate DD was reunited with his previous owner Margaret Colicos.

At the end of Of Fire and Night when the Klikiss Return to Llaro, DD accompanies Margaret Colicos.

Famous quotes containing the word biography:

Just how difficult it is to write biography can be reckoned by anybody who sits down and considers just how many people know the real truth about his or her love affairs.
Rebecca West [Cicily Isabel Fairfield] (1892–1983)

Had Dr. Johnson written his own life, in conformity with the opinion which he has given, that every man’s life may be best written by himself; had he employed in the preservation of his own history, that clearness of narration and elegance of language in which he has embalmed so many eminent persons, the world would probably have had the most perfect example of biography that was ever exhibited.
    James Boswell (1740–95)

In how few words, for instance, the Greeks would have told the story of Abelard and Heloise, making but a sentence of our classical dictionary.... We moderns, on the other hand, collect only the raw materials of biography and history, “memoirs to serve for a history,” which is but materials to serve for a mythology.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
