David O. Marley - Legal Experience

Legal Experience

Marley practised law privately from 1978 to 1980 and from 1986 to his retirement in 1997, focusing on civil and commercial litigation.

He was involved in some "victim's rights" cases. Marley successfully lobbied for an amendment to the Canada Bankruptcy Act which imposed permanent liability for civil court judgements in assault cases.

Marley also successfully argued before the Supreme Court of Canada in the Mochinski case for the imposition of governmental liability respecting the negligence of independent contractors.

Famous quotes containing the words legal and/or experience:

We should stop looking to law to provide the final answer.... Law cannot save us from ourselves.... We have to go out and try to accomplish our goals and resolve disagreements by doing what we think is right. That energy and resourcefulness, not millions of legal cubicles, is what was great about America. Let judgment and personal conviction be important again.
Philip K. Howard, U.S. lawyer. The Death of Common Sense: How Law Is Suffocating America, pp. 186-87, Random House (1994)

In all cultures, the family imprints its members with selfhood. Human experience of identity has two elements; a sense of belonging and a sense of being separate. The laboratory in which these ingredients are mixed and dispensed is the family, the matrix of identity.
    Salvador Minuchin (20th century)
