David Adelman - Legal Career and State Senate

Legal Career and State Senate

First elected in 2002, Adelman co-authored Georgia's post-conviction DNA testing law in 2003. After the 2004 court ordered redistricting of Georgia's legislative districts, Adelman was re-elected to the newly configured 42nd District and was chosen by his colleagues to be Minority Whip. Following the 2006 election, Adelman became Chairman of the Senate Urban Affairs Committee and was one of the only Democrats to chair a committee in the heavily Republican Georgia legislature.

As a senator, Adelman was recognized by the Women's Resource Center for his accomplishments combatting domestic violence.

Prior to becoming U.S. Ambassador, Adelman was as equity partner in the law firm Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan LLP for more than ten years. He became one of the youngest people to ever be made an equity partner at the firm, which, in 2010, paid each such partner on average in excess of $1 million.

Famous quotes containing the words legal, career, state and/or senate:

If he who breaks the law is not punished, he who obeys it is cheated. This, and this alone, is why lawbreakers ought to be punished: to authenticate as good, and to encourage as useful, law-abiding behavior. The aim of criminal law cannot be correction or deterrence; it can only be the maintenance of the legal order.
    Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)

He was at a starting point which makes many a man’s career a fine subject for betting, if there were any gentlemen given to that amusement who could appreciate the complicated probabilities of an arduous purpose, with all the possible thwartings and furtherings of circumstance, all the niceties of inward balance, by which a man swings and makes his point or else is carried headlong.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

We are living in a demented world. And we know it. It would not come as a surprise to anyone if tomorrow the madness gave way to a frenzy which would leave our poor Europe in a state of distracted stupor, with engines still turning and flags streaming in the breeze, but with the spirit gone.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

This is a Senate of equals, of men of individual honor and personal character, and of absolute independence. We know no masters, we acknowledge no dictators. This is a hall for mutual consultation and discussion; not an arena for the exhibition of champions.
    Daniel Webster (1782–1852)
