Dasgupta (pronounced ) is a common Bengali surname in West Bengal, India. The surname is mainly found among the members of the Baidya Brahmin caste.
Dasgupta, Sengupta, Duttagupta and other Baidya surnames were originally titles, usually given by the rulers and the zamindars (feudal landholders). Most of the Dasguptas are from Moudgalya gotra i.e. they claim descent from the sage Mudgal. There are some Dasguptas of Bharadwaja and Vatsya gotra as well. Moudgalya Dasguptas (Das Sharma) claim descent from Pandit Kavidas who, along with 3 other Vaidya pandits Budhsen, Shaktidhar Sen and Sumati, had been invited to King Adishur's court from Kannauj (Kanyakubja) in the 10th century.
