Daphne Civic Center - History

History

First proposed in April 1996 at an estimated cost of $4.2 million, plans to borrow money to build the Daphne Civic Center were approved in May 1997 with a $4.5 million budget attached. Upon completion, the center ultimately cost $6 million to construct and equip.

Scheduled for completion in September 1999, the center opened to the public on December 2, 1999 for Christmas by the Bay, the Baldwin County Humane Society's annual holiday fund-raiser. The building's formal grand opening ceremony was held in January 2000.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization.
    Georges Clemenceau (1841–1929)

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

What would we not give for some great poem to read now, which would be in harmony with the scenery,—for if men read aright, methinks they would never read anything but poems. No history nor philosophy can supply their place.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
