In 2004 Hynes was an unsuccessful candidate in the Democratic primary election for his party's nomination for the United States Senate, finishing second to State Senator Barack Obama, who went on to win the general election in November.

In September 2006, in an open letter published in the Chicago Sun-Times, Hynes endorsed drafting Obama into the 2008 presidential race. Hynes spoke on the first day of the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, lauding Obama.
