Famous quotes containing the word sentence:

A sentence should read as if its author, had he held a plow instead of a pen, could have drawn a furrow deep and straight to the end.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I grow daily to honour facts more and more, and theory less and less. A fact, it seems to me, is a great thing—a sentence printed, if not by God, then at least by the Devil.
    Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881)

Every writer is necessarily a critic—that is, each sentence is a skeleton accompanied by enormous activity of rejection; and each selection is governed by general principles concerning truth, force, beauty, and so on.... The critic that is in every fabulist is like the iceberg—nine-tenths of him is under water.
    Thornton Wilder (1897–1975)
