Accident
On May 15, 1989, inspectors were reviewing the bridge for cracks and fissures when the boom arm holding up a bucket snapped, leaving the bucket tilted on its side and the workers at risk of plummeting hundreds of feet down to the river below. Rescuers repelled down the side of the bridge to the workers and successfully brought all of them back up to safety. The story of this rescue effort was aired on Rescue 911 on September 12 of the same year.

Famous quotes containing the word accident:
“A work is never completed except by some accident such as weariness, satisfaction, the need to deliver, or death: for, in relation to who or what is making it, it can only be one stage in a series of inner transformations.”
—Paul Valéry (18711945)
“Thus he struggled, by every method, to keep his light shining before men. Surely the lighthouse-keeper has a responsible, if an easy, office. When his lamp goes out, he goes out; or, at most, only one such accident is pardoned.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“When we seek reconciliation with our enemies, it is commonly out of a desire to better our own condition, a being harassed and tired out with a state of war, and a fear of some ill accident which we are willing to prevent.”
—François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (16131680)
