Battle of Sudden Flame, Aftermath, 467, First Age

The achievements of Beren and LĂșthien mark the end of the Battle of Sudden Flame. The recovery of the Silmaril and the Elven victories of 458-466 bring hope to the Elves and Men that Morgoth may be overcome. They inspire Maedhros to build an alliance of free peoples called the Union of Maedhros that he intends will take the war to the Gates of Angband. Following the Dagor Bragollach, after the 400 years of relative peace enjoyed during the Siege of Angband, fighting with Morgoth's forces would never fully cease thereafter, but a semblance of peace returned to Beleriand for a while.

Nelson’s famous signal before the Battle of Trafalgar was not: “England expects that every man will be a hero.” It said: “England expects that every man will do his duty.” In 1805 that was enough. It should still be.

    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
