Feeding
In natural habitats, the species has a diet composed of various prey, including crustaceans, small fish, insects, worms, plants and algae. This varied diet is a result of the fish's ability to protrude its jaw 4.2% of standard length. Inferior social status and associated stress can affect digestive function in convict cichlids.

“When all who had money and leisure
Grew rural oer ices and wines,
All pleasantly toiling for pleasure,
All hungrily pining for pines,
And making of beautiful speeches,
And marring of beautiful shows,
And feeding on delicate peaches,
And treading on delicate toes.”
