Artists

Artists who began their careers in the Central Pool of Artists, and later the CSE, included Kenneth Williams, Spike Milligan, Stanley Baxter, Ken Platt and Peter Nichols.

Peter Nichols later adapted his experiences into a stage play (and later film) called Privates on Parade. This in turn inspired the long-running BBC TV comedy series It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

Over the past decade, James Fox has undertaken many CSE tours to entertain British troops on active service in Afghanistan, Bosnia, The Falkland Islands and Iraq. In recognition of this, he was twice invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall before the Queen as part of the Festival of Remembrance. In 2004, he presented a film highlighting the work of CSE before his performance.

Famous quotes containing the word artists:

In dealings with scholars and artists we are apt to miscalculate in opposite directions: behind a remarkable scholar we sometimes, and not infrequently, find a mediocre man, and behind a mediocre artist, fairly often—a very remarkable man.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

... artists were intended to be an ornament to society. As a society in themselves they are unthinkable.
    Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973)

We artists are indestructible; even in a prison, or in a concentration camp, I would be almighty in my own world of art, even if I had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell.
    Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)
