Clough Head - Old Coach Road

Old Coach Road

An old route, marked on maps as "Old Coach Road" crosses the northeastern slopes of Clough Head, reaching a high point of 437 m (1,435 ft) as it crosses from St John's in the Vale to Matterdale. This has suffered damage from use by off-road vehicles in recent years, but such activity is currently prohibited. Near the road summit is Hause Well, a spring issuing from a crevice in the rock.

Famous quotes containing the words coach and/or road:

There is no country in which so absolute a homage is paid to wealth. In America there is a touch of shame when a man exhibits the evidences of large property, as if after all it needed apology. But the Englishman has pure pride in his wealth, and esteems it a final certificate. A coarse logic rules throughout all English souls: if you have merit, can you not show it by your good clothes and coach and horses?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

There was now no road further, the river being the only highway, and but half a dozen log huts, confined to its banks, to be met with for thirty miles. On either hand, and beyond, was a wholly uninhabited wilderness, stretching to Canada.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
