Charlton and Wilsford - Local Government

Local Government

Charlton and Wilsford together form a civil parish with an elected parish council. They also fall within the area of the Wiltshire Council unitary authority, which is responsible for all significant local government functions.

In the census of 2002, the population of the parish was 146.

Note that the ONS website (see 'Sources' below) refers to the civil parish as simply Charlton; it is not clear if this is a valid alternative name for the parish or a clerical error on their part.

Famous quotes containing the words local and/or government:

The local is a shabby thing. There’s nothing worse than bringing us back down to our own little corner, our own territory, the radiant promiscuity of the face to face. A culture which has taken the risk of the universal, must perish by the universal.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

I do not hesitate to say, that those who call themselves Abolitionists should at once effectually withdraw their support, both in person and property, from the government of Massachusetts, and not wait until they constitute a majority of one, before they suffer the right to prevail through them. I think that it is enough if they have God on their side, without waiting for that other one. Moreover, any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one already.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
