Carney Island

Carney Island (73°57′S 121°00′W / 73.95°S 121°W / -73.95; -121) is an ice-covered island, 110 km (68 mi) long and about 8,500 km2 (3,282 sq mi) in area, with all but its North coast lying within the Getz Ice Shelf, Antarctica. It is located between Siple Island and Wright Island along the coast of Marie Byrd Land.

Carney Island was named by the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Admiral Robert B. Carney (1895–1990), Chief of Naval Operations during the organization of Operation Deep Freeze support for the International Geophysical Year of 1957–1958.

Famous quotes containing the words carney and/or island:

    Little drops of water,
    Little grains of sand,
    Make the mighty ocean
    And the beauteous land.
    —Julia A. Fletcher Carney (1823–1908)

I suggested to them also the great desirability of a general knowledge on the Island of the English language. They are under an English speaking government and are a part of the territory of an English speaking nation.... While I appreciated the desirability of maintaining their grasp on the Spanish language, the beauty of that language and the richness of its literature, that as a practical matter for them it was quite necessary to have a good comprehension of English.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)
