Capital punishment in Denmark (Danish: Dødsstraf - literally "Death punishment") has been entirely abolished in peace-time since 1930 and for war crimes since 1978 (or strictly since 1 January 1994). The last peace-time execution was carried out in 1892, but followed by executions during the World War II purges in 1945-50. Reinstitution of capital punishment is not supported by any political party in Parliament. According to an opinion poll from 2006, one fifth of Danes supported capital punishment for certain crimes. The number was unchanged since another poll in 1999.

Shall not be winked at, how shall we stretch our eye

To let the punishment fit the crime The punishment fit the crime; And make each prisoner pent Unwillingly represent
