Candide (operetta) - Music

Music

Though the show as a whole received mixed reviews at its opening, the music was immediately a hit. Much of the score was recorded on an original cast album, which was a success and is still in print as of 2009.

Famous quotes containing the word music:

Now the rich stream of Music winds along
    Deep, majestic, smooth, and strong,
    Thomas Gray (1716–1771)

A woman drew her long black hair out tight
And fiddled whisper music on those strings
And bats with baby faces in the violet light
    Whistled, and beat their wings
And crawled head downward down a blackened wall....
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

But the dark changed to red, and torches shone,
And deafening music shook the leaves; a troop
Shouldered a litter with a wounded man,
Or smote upon the string and to the sound
Sang of the beast that gave the fatal wound.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
