Famous quotes containing the words love, sponge and/or show:
“War was then no longer this noble and unified outburst of souls in love with glory that he had imagined from Napoleon’s proclamations.”
—Stendhal [Marie Henri Beyle] (1783–1842)
“He who has been impoverished for a long time ... who has long stood before the door of the mighty in darkness and begged for alms, has filled his heart with bitterness so that it resembles a sponge full of gall; he knows about the injustice and folly of all human action and sometimes his lips tremble with rage and a stifled scream.”
—Stefan Zweig (18811942)
“They are, as it were, train-bearers in the pageant of life, and hold a glass up to humanity, frailer than itself. We see ourselves at second-hand in them: they show us all that we are, all that we wish to be, and all that we dread to be.... What brings the resemblance nearer is, that, as they imitate us, we, in our turn, imitate them.... There is no class of society whom so many persons regard with affection as actors.”
—William Hazlitt (1778–1830)
