History
Formerly much of Broughton Gifford and the surrounding area was covered with woodlands. Much of these were felled during the First and Second World Wars. Villagers long used the common to graze their livestock and grow their crops. Although the Common was not included when the rest of the parish's lands were inclosed in 1783, eventually its agricultural uses died out. There were numerous ponds on the common, but the council decided to fill many of them in. There is currently a movement to re-establish the ponds.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Boys forget what their country means by just reading the land of the free in history books. Then they get to be men, they forget even more. Libertys too precious a thing to be buried in books.”
—Sidney Buchman (19021975)
“In history as in human life, regret does not bring back a lost moment and a thousand years will not recover something lost in a single hour.”
—Stefan Zweig (18811942)
“... in a history of spiritual rupture, a social compact built on fantasy and collective secrets, poetry becomes more necessary than ever: it keeps the underground aquifers flowing; it is the liquid voice that can wear through stone.”
—Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
