Literary Significance
The novel's content has been the frequent target of censors and appears on the American Library Association list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000 at number eight. The censorship attempts stem from death being a part of the plot; Jess' frequent use of the word "lord" outside of prayer; allegations that the book promotes secular humanism, New Age religion, occultism, and Satanism; and for use of offensive language.
The book is studied in English studies classes in Ireland, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Philippines, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Panama, South Africa and the United States.
It was adapted into a theatrical work by children's book author Stephanie S. Tolan.

Famous quotes containing the words literary and/or significance:
“Poetry seems to have been eliminated as a literary genre, and installed instead, as a kind of spiritual aerobic exercisenobody need read it, but anybody can do it.”
—Marilyn Hacker (b. 1942)
“Politics is not an end, but a means. It is not a product, but a process. It is the art of government. Like other values it has its counterfeits. So much emphasis has been placed upon the false that the significance of the true has been obscured and politics has come to convey the meaning of crafty and cunning selfishness, instead of candid and sincere service.”
—Calvin Coolidge (18721933)
