City of Sanctuary

After a campaign in 2008 Bradford was recognized as a 'City of Sanctuary' on 18 November 2010. It is " a place where a broad range of local organizations, community groups and faith communities, as well as local government are publicly committed to welcoming and including people seeking sanctuary." Famous quotes containing the words city and/or sanctuary:

Often even a whole city suffers for a bad man who sins and contrives presumptuous deeds.
    Hesiod (c. 8th century B.C.)

There is immunity in reading, immunity in formal society, in office routine, in the company of old friends and in the giving of officious help to strangers, but there is no sanctuary in one bed from the memory of another. The past with its anguish will break through every defence-line of custom and habit; we must sleep and therefore we must dream.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)
