Bishopric of Dorpat - The Bishopric Today

The Bishopric Today

The centre of the bishopric was the Tartu (Dorpat) castle (Estonian: Toomemägi). The castle was damaged during the Northern War and was dismantled during the 18th century, later (at the beginning of 19th century) an observatory was built on the site. The seat of the bishopric, Dorpat Cathedral or Tartu Cathedral, was damaged during the Protestant Reformation and has been in ruins since the 17th century.

Famous quotes containing the word today:

The late Président de Montesquieu told me that he knew how to be blind—he had been so for such a long time—but I swear that I do not know how to be deaf: I cannot get used to it, and I am as humiliated and distressed by it today as I was during the first week. No philosophy in the world can palliate deafness.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
