Bishop Ford Freeway - Route Description

Route Description

The Bishop Ford Freeway begins at the southern end of the Dan Ryan Expressway, where that expressway splits into the Bishop Ford and Interstate 57. The route curves east, housing a Chicago Transit Authority train yard in its median. After the Stony Island Avenue exit, the freeway turns southward, passing through the Pullman neighborhood. The highway passes to the west of Lake Calumet, which it runs alongside until 130th Street. After leaving Chicago, the freeway enters Dolton, where it crosses the Calumet River on a steel truss bridge commonly called the Steel Bridge. Past Illinois Route 83 (Sibley Boulevard), the route enters South Holland. It crosses the Little Calumet River before intersecting U.S. Route 6. The freeway continues south before ending at a junction with the Tri-State Tollway, the Kingery Expressway, and Illinois Route 394.

Famous quotes containing the words route and/or description:

A route differs from a road not only because it is solely intended for vehicles, but also because it is merely a line that connects one point with another. A route has no meaning in itself; its meaning derives entirely from the two points that it connects. A road is a tribute to space. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop. A route is the triumphant devaluation of space, which thanks to it has been reduced to a mere obstacle to human movement and a waste of time.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)

A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.
    John Locke (1632–1704)
