Boxing Career
Paret won the welterweight title for the first time in 1960, but lost it seven months later when Emile Griffith knocked him out. Paret recaptured the crown a half year later in a split-decision over Griffith. In his third match with Griffith, Paret was knocked out in the 12th round, sustaining what is regarded as one of the more brutal beatings in boxing history. Four months before his final match, Paret fought for the middleweight title against Gene Fullmer, but was stopped in the 10th round.

Famous quotes containing the words boxing and/or career:
“... to paint with oil paints for the first time ... is like trying to make something exquisitely accurate and microscopically clear out of mud pies with boxing gloves on.”
—Brenda Ueland (18911985)
“I began my editorial career with the presidency of Mr. Adams, and my principal object was to render his administration all the assistance in my power. I flattered myself with the hope of accompanying him through [his] voyage, and of partaking in a trifling degree, of the glory of the enterprise; but he suddenly tacked about, and I could follow him no longer. I therefore waited for the first opportunity to haul down my sails.”
—William Cobbett (17621835)
