Benjamin Wade

Benjamin Franklin "Bluff" Wade (October 27, 1800 – March 2, 1878) was a U.S. lawyer and United States Senator. In the Senate, he was associated with the Radical Republicans of that time.

Had the impeachment of Andrew Johnson in 1868 succeeded, he would have assumed the presidential powers and duties as Acting President.

Famous quotes containing the words benjamin and/or wade:

The killing of a criminal can be moral—but never its legitimation.
    —Walter Benjamin (1892–1940)

We need the tonic of wildness,—to wade sometimes in marshes where the bittern and the meadow-hen lurk, and hear the booming of the snipe; to smell the whispering sedge where only some wilder and more solitary fowl builds her nest, and the mink crawls with its belly close to the ground.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
