Early Life

Born in East Boston, Massachusetts, to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants in 1901, his family moved frequently. He attended Harvard University as a commuter between 1916 and 1920 and earned his master's degree in English at Columbia University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska where he studied under Louise Pound and William Duncan Strong.
