Wartime Contribution
Belvedere made a significant contribution to the effort of the two major world wars. Almost 50 students of the college lost their lives in the First World War. Their names are listed on a new memorial in the College yard. The college also published a book, The Cruel Clouds of War, a Roll of Honour listing Belvedere's war dead. The new war memorial was unveiled by former Taoiseach, Dr. Garret Fitzgerald in 2003. Fourteen alumni of Belvedere died during the Second World War. Their names are also listed on a memorial in the yard. One Old Belvederian was awarded the Victoria Cross, Surgeon Captain Thomas Joseph Crean, VC DSO (1873-1923); he later achieved the rank of Major.

Famous quotes containing the words wartime and/or contribution:
“The man who gets drunk in peacetime is a coward. The man who gets drunk in wartime goes on being a coward.”
—José Bergamín (18951983)
“Parents are used to being made to feel guilty about...their contribution to the population problem, the school tax burden, and declining test scores. They expect to be blamed by teachers and psychologists, if not by police. And they will be blamed by the children themselves. It is hardy a wonder, then, that they withdraw into what used to be called permissiveness but is really neglect.”
—C. John Sommerville (20th century)
