Battle of Talavera - Popular Culture

Popular Culture

Talavera is the setting for Sharpe's Eagle, the first book written in Bernard Cornwell's "Sharpe" series, and is depicted in the conclusion of the film adaptation of the same name.

In 'A Magnum for Schneider,' the 1967 pilot for the British TV series Callan starring Edward Woodward, Callan and Schneider re-fight the Battle of Talavera as a war-game. The scene is replicated in Callan creator James Mitchell's 1969 novel 'Red File for Callan.'

Eugene O'Neill's play "A Touch of the Poet" takes place 19 years after the battle on the same day 27 July and plays a significant part for the story and its characters.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

Popular culture entered my life as Shirley Temple, who was exactly my age and wrote a letter in the newspapers telling how her mother fixed spinach for her, with lots of butter.... I was impressed by Shirley Temple as a little girl my age who had power: she could write a piece for the newspapers and have it printed in her own handwriting.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

The new sound-sphere is global. It ripples at great speed across languages, ideologies, frontiers and races.... The economics of this musical esperanto is staggering. Rock and pop breed concentric worlds of fashion, setting and life-style. Popular music has brought with it sociologies of private and public manner, of group solidarity. The politics of Eden come loud.
    George Steiner (b. 1929)

As the traveler who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate more lovingly, our own.
    Margaret Mead (1901–1978)
