Battle of Brandy Station - Preservation Efforts

Preservation Efforts

The Brandy Station Foundation (BSF) was formed to protect the Brandy Station Battlefield from development. According to Clark B. Hall, "a small group of citizens came together over coffee in a little home situated just south of the Rappahannock River in eastern Culpeper County, Virginia". Over time the organization grew to over 400 members and has been the cornerstone of efforts to save the battlefield from attempts to turn it into an office park, and a racetrack, as well as preserving the historic building known as Graffiti House. In 1990, the National Park Service completed mapping of historic resources at Brandy Station and recommended preservation of 1,262 acres (5.1 km²) at four separate engagement areas.

In 2008, the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) began work on a 23-acre (93,000 m2) preservation campaign atop Fleetwood Hill at the Brandy Station battlefield. Later in 2008 the CWPT acquired a second tract of 26 acres (110,000 m2) on Fleetwood Hill. The CWPT has worked to save 973 acres (3.94 km2) at the Brandy Station battlefield since its inception.

Famous quotes containing the words preservation and/or efforts:

The preservation of life seems to be rather a slogan than a genuine goal of the anti-abortion forces; what they want is control. Control over behavior: power over women. Women in the anti-choice movement want to share in male power over women, and do so by denying their own womanhood, their own rights and responsibilities.
    Ursula K. Le Guin (b. 1929)

What culture lacks is the taste for anonymous, innumerable germination. Culture is smitten with counting and measuring; it feels out of place and uncomfortable with the innumerable; its efforts tend, on the contrary, to limit the numbers in all domains; it tries to count on its fingers.
    Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985)
