The Battle of Bear Paw (also written as Battle of the Bears Paw or Battle of the Bears Paw Mountains) was the final engagement of the Nez Perce War. Some of the Nez Perce were able to escape to Canada, but Chief Joseph was forced to surrender the majority of his followers to General Oliver O. Howard and Colonel Nelson A. Miles. The battlefield today is part of the Nez Perce National Historical Park and the Nez Perce National Historic Trail.

“The militancy of men, through all the centuries, has drenched the world with blood, and for these deeds of horror and destruction men have been rewarded with monuments, with great songs and epics. —Emmeline Pankhurst (18581928)
“I know no East or West, North or South, when it comes to my class fighting the battle for justice. If it is my fortune to live to see the industrial chain broken from every workingmans child in America, and if then there is one black child in Africa in bondage, there shall I go.”
—Mother Jones (18301930)
“There is no doctrine of the Reason which will bear to be taught by the Understanding.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Now Kitty, lets consider who it was that dreamed it all. This is a serious question, my dear, and you should not go on licking your paw like thatas if Dinah hadnt washed you this morning! You see, Kitty, it must have been either me or the Red King.”
—Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (18321898)
