Famous quotes containing the word letters:
“There are other letters for the child to learn than those which Cadmus invented. The Spaniards have a good term to express this wild and dusky knolwedge, Grammatica parda, tawny grammar, a kind of mother-wit derived from that same leopard to which I have referred.” —Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The entire merit of a man can never be made known; nor the sum of his demerits, if he have them. We are only known by our names; as letters sealed up, we but read each others superscriptions.” —Herman Melville (18191891)
“A man who publishes his letters becomes a nudistnothing shields him from the worlds gaze except his bare skin. A writer, writing away, can always fix himself up to make himself more presentable, but a man who has written a letter is stuck with it for all time.” —E.B. (Elwyn Brooks)
