Barrel Chest

Barrel chest generally refers to a broad, deep chest found on a man. A man described as barrel chested will usually have a naturally large ribcage, very round torso, large lung capacity, and will potentially have lots of upper body strength. It can sometimes be a sign of acromegaly (a syndrome resulting from excess levels of Growth Hormone in the body). It is most commonly relates to osteoarthritis as individuals age. Arthritis can stiffen the chest causing the ribs become fixed in their most expanded position, giving the appearance of a barrel chest.

Barrel chest also refers to an increase in the anterior posterior diameter of the chest wall resembling the shape of a barrel, most often associated with emphysema. There are two main causes of the barrel chest phenomena in emphysema:

  1. Increased compliance of the lungs leads to the accumulation of air pockets inside the thoracic cavity.
  2. Increased compliance of the lungs increases the intrathoracic pressure. This increase in pressure allows the chest wall to naturally expand outward.

Famous quotes containing the words barrel and/or chest:

I am from time to time congratulating myself on my general want of success as a lecturer; apparent want of success, but is it not a real triumph? I do my work clean as I go along, and they will not be likely to want me anywhere again. So there is no danger of my repeating myself, and getting to a barrel of sermons, which you must upset, and begin again with.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Are you there, Africa with the bulging chest and oblong thigh? Sulking Africa, wrought of iron, in the fire, Africa of the millions of royal slaves, deported Africa, drifting continent, are you there? Slowly you vanish, you withdraw into the past, into the tales of castaways, colonial museums, the works of scholars.
    Jean Genet (1910–1986)
