Despite United States prohibitions on the import of balisongs, beginning in the 1980s, a variety of Asian manufacturers continued to export low-cost Balisong knives to the United States. These products are low quality due to their usage of cast handles made of brittle zamak alloy and blades made of low-quality steel.
