Axis System

In music, the axis system is a system of analysis originating in the work of Ernő Lendvaï, which he developed in his analysis of the music of Béla Bartók.

The axis system is "concerned with harmonic and tonal substitution", and posits a novel type of functional relationship between tones and chords. Lendvaï's analyses aim to show how chords and tones related by the intervals of a minor third and tritone can function as tonal substitutes for one another, and do so in many of Bartók's compositions.

Famous quotes containing the words axis and/or system:

    He is the essence that inquires.
    He is the axis of the star;
    He is the sparkle of the spar;
    He is the heart of every creature;
    He is the meaning of each feature;
    And his mind is the sky,
    Than all it holds more deep, more high.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    Whoever places his trust into a system will soon be without a home. While you are building your third story, the two lower ones have already been dismantled.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)
