Awesome God

"Awesome God" is a contemporary worship song written by Rich Mullins and first recorded on his 1988 album, Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth. It was the first single from the album and rose to the No. 1 spot on Christian radio and subsequently became a popular congregational song. Its title is inspired by a biblical expression (Nehemiah 1:5, Nehemiah 9:32, Psalm 47, Daniel 9:4, etc.), variously translated as "Awesome God", (JPS, in the old-fashioned meaning "awe-inspiring"), "great" (KJV), among other alternatives.

Many Christian bands have performed versions in various styles, from ska to swing to straight rock and traditional worship style.

Famous quotes containing the words awesome and/or god:

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy pow’r thro’out the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
    How great thou art!
    Stuart K. Hine (b. 1899)

You danced with me never saying a word.
Instead the serpent spoke as you held me close.
The serpent, that mocker, woke up and pressed against me
like a great god and we bent together
    like two lonely swans.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
