Production of Aviation Fuel
The production of aviation fuel falls into two categories: fuels suitable for turbine engines and fuels suitable for piston engine aircraft. There are international specifications for both. Aviation gasoline, Avgas, is used in piston engine aircraft where the emphasis is on anti-knock characteristics. The fuel must meet performance guidelines for both the rich mixture condition required for higher power during take-off and the weak mixture which permits economic cruising. Jet fuel used for turbine engines must remain pumpable at low temperatures, meet definite limits in terms of density and calorific value and burn cleanly and remain stable when heated to high temperatures.
Avgas is sold in much lower volumes, but to many more individual aircraft, whereas jet fuel is sold in high volumes to large aircraft operated typically by airlines, military and large corporate aircraft.

Famous quotes containing the words production of, production and/or fuel:
“The growing of food and the growing of children are both vital to the familys survival.... Who would dare make the judgment that holding your youngest baby on your lap is less important than weeding a few more yards in the maize field? Yet this is the judgment our society makes constantly. Production of autos, canned soup, advertising copy is important. Houseworkcleaning, feeding, and caringis unimportant.”
—Debbie Taylor (20th century)
“... if the production of any commodity necessitates the sacrifice of human life, society should do without that commodity, but it can not do without that life.”
—Emma Goldman (18691940)
“I had an old axe which nobody claimed, with which by spells in winter days, on the sunny side of the house, I played about the stumps which I had got out of my bean-field. As my driver prophesied when I was plowing, they warmed me twice, once while I was splitting them, and again when they were on the fire, so that no fuel could give out more heat. As for the axe,... if it was dull, it was at least hung true.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
