Austria at The Olympics

Austria has competed at most of the modern Olympic Games, missing only the 1920 Summer Olympics, from which it was barred because of its role in World War I. The nation has twice hosted the Games, both in Innsbruck for the 1964 Winter Olympics and 1976 Winter Olympics.

Austrian athletes have won a total of 86 medals at the Summer Olympic Games, and another 201 at the Winter Olympic Games. Austria has won more medals in alpine skiing than any other nation.

The National Olympic Committee for Austria is the Österreichisches Olympisches Comité, and was created in 1908 and recognized in 1912.

Famous quotes containing the word austria:

All the terrors of the French Republic, which held Austria in awe, were unable to command her diplomacy. But Napoleon sent to Vienna M. de Narbonne, one of the old noblesse, with the morals, manners, and name of that interest, saying, that it was indispensable to send to the old aristocracy of Europe men of the same connection, which, in fact, constitutes a sort of free- masonry. M. de Narbonne, in less than a fortnight, penetrated all the secrets of the imperial cabinet.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
