Australian Independent Record Labels Association - History

History

AIR was started by a group of Sydney and Melbourne music industry professionals and labels, who began meeting regularly to formulate ideas on how to start an industry association that would assist the on-going development of Australia’s independent record industry. The Association was incorporated in 1996 thanks to a small donation from Phantom Records, and received its first operation funding grant from The Australia Council for the Arts in 1998.

Additional Australia Council funding was received in 2000, and in this same year, members also voted to change AIR’s legal status from Incorporated Association to Company Limited by Guarantee.

AIR moved its base from Sydney, New South Wales to Brisbane, Queensland in 2004 when Stuart Watters (formerly of Q Music, Queensland's state music council) took over as its Chief Executive Officer.

In 2007 AIR moved its operations from Brisbane to Melbourne, Victoria where it is now based in the Rubber Records and Media Arts Lawyers building in North Melbourne.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of mankind interests us only as it exhibits a steady gain of truth and right, in the incessant conflict which it records between the material and the moral nature.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

All history attests that man has subjected woman to his will, used her as a means to promote his selfish gratification, to minister to his sensual pleasures, to be instrumental in promoting his comfort; but never has he desired to elevate her to that rank she was created to fill. He has done all he could to debase and enslave her mind; and now he looks triumphantly on the ruin he has wrought, and say, the being he has thus deeply injured is his inferior.
    Sarah M. Grimke (1792–1873)

Certainly there is not the fight recorded in Concord history, at least, if in the history of America, that will bear a moment’s comparison with this, whether for the numbers engaged in it, or for the patriotism and heroism displayed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
