Assiniboine Community College - History

History

Assiniboine Community College has an interesting 49-year history. Originally called the Brandon Vocational Training Centre, it opened its doors in February 1961, with a staff of two administrative personnel and two instructors, two course offerings, and a total of 24 students. Soon renamed the Manitoba Vocational Training Centre, it grew steadily. By 1966, a staff of six administrative personnel and 18 instructors handled 11 different program offerings with a capacity of 300 students.

On December 15, 1969, Manitoba’s three Technical Vocational schools entered a new phase of development when they became community colleges. The Manitoba Vocational Training Centre was renamed Assiniboine Community College, while the technical colleges in Winnipeg and The Pas became Red River and Keewatin Community Colleges.

In 1982, an expansion to the original college building was completed, which included additional classroom space, heavy duty and general shops, educational support services and Students’ Association offices and store. The expansion allowed the college to consolidate facilities and abandon inadequate training space at other Brandon locations.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

While the Republic has already acquired a history world-wide, America is still unsettled and unexplored. Like the English in New Holland, we live only on the shores of a continent even yet, and hardly know where the rivers come from which float our navy.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

All history is a record of the power of minorities, and of minorities of one.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
