Area codes 705 and 249 are telephone area codes that cover most of northeastern and central Ontario in Canada. 705 was initially created in 1957 by the North American Numbering Plan (NANPA) from portions of the area covered by area codes 613 and 519. Area code 807, covering northwestern Ontario, was split from area code 705 in early 1962.
On March 19, 2011, area code 249 was added as an overlay code. In addition, since this date all calls require ten-digit dialing.
The incumbent local exchange carriers in 705/249 are Bell Canada, Northern Telephone, Ontera, East Link and some municipally-owned carriers.

Famous quotes containing the words area and/or codes:
“... nothing is more human than substituting the quantity of words and actions for their character. But using imprecise words is very similar to using lots of words, for the more imprecise a word is, the greater the area it covers.”
—Robert Musil (18801942)
“... until both employers and workers groups assume responsibility for chastising their own recalcitrant children, they can vainly bay the moon about ignorant and unfair public criticism. Moreover, their failure to impose voluntarily upon their own groups codes of decency and honor will result in more and more necessity for government control.”
—Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
