On 17 March 1898, MacLaren married Kathleen Maud Power, whom he met on the voyage to Australia with Stoddart's cricket team in 1894. Power, the socialite daughter of a wealthy Australian horse racing enthusiast. The wedding attracted media attention and was well-attended by interested local people.
