Arab Socialist Movement

The Arab Socialist Movement (Arabic: حركة الاشتراكيين العرب - Harakat Al-Ishtirakiyeen Al-'Arab‎) also known as Arab Socialist Party is a political party in Syria.

It is an Arab socialist party, with roots in the peasant movement. It traces its roots back to the 1930s radical anti-feudal group led by Akram al-Hawrani, which merged with the Ba'ath Party in 1953, only to withdraw again in 1963. It is split into several branches. One is part of the National Progressive Front of legally licenced parties which accept the constitutional leadership of the Ba'ath Party. In the 22 April 2007 People's Council of Syria election this branch was awarded 3 out of 250 seats in the parliament. Another branch has also gained legal recognition and parliamentary representation, but under the name National Vow Movement. A third faction remains in opposition, seated in the National Democratic Rally.

In 2012 the party retired from National Progressive Front and moved to opposition.

Famous quotes containing the words arab, socialist and/or movement:

As the Arab proverb says, “The dog barks and the caravan passes”. After having dropped this quotation, Mr. Norpois stopped to judge the effect it had on us. It was great; the proverb was known to us: it had been replaced that year among men of high worth by this other: “Whoever sows the wind reaps the storm”, which had needed some rest since it was not as indefatigable and hardy as, “Working for the King of Prussia”.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

Democracy is the wholesome and pure air without which a socialist public organization cannot live a full-blooded life.
    Mikhail Gorbachev (b. 1931)

When it had long since outgrown his purely medical implications and become a world movement which penetrated into every field of science and every domain of the intellect: literature, the history of art, religion and prehistory; mythology, folklore, pedagogy, and what not.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)
