Thin Element Antennas
In the case of thin element antennas such as monopoles and dipoles, there is no simple relationship between physical area and effective area. However, the effective areas can be calculated from their power gain figures:
Wire antenna | Power gain | Effective area |
---|---|---|
Short dipole (Hertzian dipole) | 1.5 | 0.1194 2 |
Half-wave dipole | 1.64 | 0.1305 2 |
Quarter-wave monopole | 3.28 | 0.2610 2 |
This assumes that the monopole antenna is mounted above an infinite ground plane.

Famous quotes containing the words thin and/or element:
“from above, thin squeaks of radio static,
The captured fume of space foams in our ears”
—Hart Crane (18991932)
“One can describe a landscape in many different words and sentences, but one would not normally cut up a picture of a landscape and rearrange it in different patterns in order to describe it in different ways. Because a photograph is not composed of discrete units strung out in a linear row of meaningful pieces, we do not understand it by looking at one element after another in a set sequence. The photograph is understood in one act of seeing; it is perceived in a gestalt.”
