Andrew Scheer - Speaker of The House of Commons

Speaker of The House of Commons

When the Conservative Party won a majority at the 2011 federal election, Scheer's experience as Deputy Speaker led many to consider him the front-runner to be elected Speaker of the House of Commons. On June 2, 2011, he defeated Denise Savoie of the NDP in the sixth round of balloting, making him the youngest Speaker of the House in Canadian history and the first speaker from Saskatchewan.

Famous quotes containing the words house of commons, speaker, house and/or commons:

The House of Commons starts its proceedings with a prayer. The chaplain looks at the assembled members with their varied intelligence and then prays for the country.
    Lord Denning (b. 1899)

Good as is discourse, silence is better, and shames it. The length of the discourse indicates the distance of thought betwixt the speaker and the hearer. If they were at a perfect understanding in any part, no words would be necessary thereon. If at one in all parts, no words would be suffered.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Go to the adolescent who are smothered in family—
    Oh how hideous it is
To see three generations of one house gathered together!
It is like an old tree with shoots,
And with some branches rotted and falling.
    Ezra Pound (1885–1972)

I am really sorry to see my countrymen trouble themselves about politics. If men were wise, the most arbitrary princes could not hurt them. If they are not wise, the freest government is compelled to be a tyranny. Princes appear to me to be fools. Houses of Commons & Houses of Lords appear to me to be fools; they seem to me to be something else besides human life.
    William Blake (1757–1827)
