Black Holes At The Galactic Center
By using the high resolution of the Keck telescope in the infrared, Ghez and her colleagues have been able to peer into the dark center of our galaxy. They have discovered many stars in highly elliptical orbits around the huge black hole there. This graphic shows the partial orbits of many stars orbiting the black hole at the Galactic Center. Since 1995, object SO-2 has made almost a complete elliptical orbit. The graphic was made from snapshots of the position of the various stars over the last decade. Several decades more will be required to complete the orbits of some of these stars. in October 2012, a second star was identified by her team at UCLA, S0-102, orbiting the Galactic Center.

Famous quotes containing the words black, holes, galactic and/or center:
“As blacks, we need not be afraid that encouraging moral development, a conscience and guilt will prevent social action. Black children without the ability to feel a normal amount of guilt will victimize their parents, relatives and community first. They are unlikely to be involved in social action to improve the black community. Their self-centered personalities will cause them to look out for themselves without concern for others, black or white.”
—James P. Comer (20th century)
“Why are all these dolls falling out of the sky?
Was there a father?
Or have the planets cut holes in their nets
and let our childhood out,
or are we the dolls themselves,
born but never fed?”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
“When the galactic sea was sucked
And all the dry seabed unlocked,
I sent my creature scouting on the globe,
That globe itself of hair and bone....”
—Dylan Thomas (19141953)
“Louise Bryant: Im sorry if you dont believe in mutual independence and free love and respect.
Eugene ONeill: Dont give me a lot of parlor socialism that you learned in the village. If you were mine, I wouldnt share you with anybody or anything. It would be just you and me. Youd be at the center of it all. You know it would feel a lot more like love than being left alone with your work.”
—Warren Beatty (b. 1937)
