Traditionally, commercial airships or blimps built by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, of Akron, Ohio, US have been named after former America’s Cup winning boats. Paul W. Litchfield, an early chairman of Goodyear, envisioned airships as “the aerial yachts of the wealthy” and, in 1928, began the tradition of naming Goodyear blimps after A.C. boats, with blimps named Stars & Stripes, Columbia, Ranger, Rainbow, Enterprise, Resolute, Reliance, Defender, Vigilant, Volunteer, Mayflower, Puritan and America.
