Famous quotes containing the words american, river, mile, endurance and/or run:

    I should think the American admiration of five-minute tourists has done more to kill the sacredness of old European beauty and aspiration than multitudes of bombs would have done.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

    The river knows the way to the sea;
    Without a pilot it runs and falls,
    Blessing all lands with its charity.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    For now the moon with friendless light carouses
    On hill and housetop, street and marketplace,
    Men will plunge, mile after mile of men,
    To crush this lucent madness of the face....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

    The men who think of superannuation at sixty-one are those whose lives have been idle, not they who have really buckled themselves to work. It is my opinion that nothing seasons the mind for endurance like hard work. Port wine should perhaps be added.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

    I am not much an advocate for traveling, and I observe that men run away to other countries, because they are not good in their own, and run back to their own, because they pass for nothing in the new places.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
