Famous quotes containing the words american, center, labor and/or solidarity:

After all, the chief business of the American people is business. They are profoundly concerned with producing, buying, selling, investing and prospering in the world.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

Columbus stood in his age as the pioneer of progress and enlightenment. The system of universal education is in our age the most prominent and salutary feature of the spirit of enlightenment, and it is peculiarly appropriate that the schools be made by the people the center of the day’s demonstration. Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

Whose are the truly labored sentences? From the weak and flimsy periods of the politician and literary man, we are glad to turn even to the description of work, the simple record of the month’s labor in the farmer’s almanac, to restore our tone and spirits.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

It is not in how one soul approaches another but in how it withdraws that I know its affinity and solidarity with the other.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
