American Beverage Institute

The American Beverage Institute is a restaurant industry trade group based in Washington, D.C., "dedicated to protecting the on-premise dining experience - which often includes the responsible consumption of adult beverages." It supports a targeted approach to combating drunk driving that includes the use of roving patrols, instead of sobriety checkpoints, and use of ignition interlock technology by high blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and repeat drunk drivers.

The group sometimes sends letters or columns to newspapers arguing that laws that have been adopted to fight drunk driving are ineffective or inappropriate.

Sarah Longwell, ABI's managing director, argues in the Tampa Tribune that judges should be involved in the decision as to whether or not a low-BAC, first-time offender should have an interlock installed in his or her car.

Famous quotes containing the words american and/or institute:

I believe that the miseries consequent on the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors are so great as imperiously to command the attention of all dedicated lives; and that while the abolition of American slavery was numerically first, the abolition of the liquor traffic is not morally second.
    Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911)

Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
