In 2003 he lost an eye in an accident with hydrochloric acid while cleaning a swimming pool filter, and in 2004 he had a prosthetic eye fitted. On 29 August 2010 a story about Schultz appeared on the front page of the Sunday Telegraph in which it was claimed he had threatened two independent MPs in the Federal Parliament urging them to make a decision on which party they would support. Alby Schultz denied the accuracy of the story.
On 17 April 2012, Mr Schultz announced that he would not stand at the Next Australian federal election in 2013 and he would retire from politics.
Schultz is a staunch monarchist and has long been fighting against the movement to make Australia a republic.
